Lansdowne, ON, November 7, 2024 – The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority (TIBA) and The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) announce that the rehabilitation project on the Canadian Span of the Thousand Islands Bridge System will pause for the winter season and is scheduled to resume in the spring of 2025.

Significant advancements have been made this year, focusing on enhancing the safety and structural integrity of the bridge. With the most impactful phases of work completed, the remaining tasks will continue next spring with minimal anticipated disruption to travelers.

Ensuring the safety of our workers and the quality of the rehabilitation efforts is our top priority. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate the understanding and patience of our bridge users.

Project Highlights

  • Major Milestones Achieved: Significant rehabilitation efforts—including repaving of the north and south approaches, replacement of girder pins, and wrapping of the east main cable—have strengthened the bridge’s infrastructure and surface, enhancing safety for all users.
  • Winter Pause: Construction activities will pause over the winter months due to seasonal weather conditions, ensuring safety and quality workmanship.
  • Resumption in Spring 2025: The project is scheduled to resume in the spring, focusing on completing the final phase of wrapping the west main cable. The remaining work will be less disruptive, involving only nighttime alternating lane closures with no closures during the day. Additionally, there will be no noise impacts during this phase.

Pedestrian and Cyclist Access

  • The Canadian bridge remains closed to pedestrians and cyclists for the winter season.

Traffic Information

  • The bridge will remain open to vehicular traffic throughout the winter pause, with normal operations expected.

FBCL and TIBA extend their sincere gratitude to all partners, staff, and bridge users for their understanding and cooperation during this essential rehabilitation project. The enhancements made are a critical investment in the infrastructure that supports international commerce and community connectivity.
